Press release

LOS ANGELES, CACouncilwoman Monica Rodriguez issued the following statement after the Los Angeles City Council adopted a motion allocating funding to expand her signature Youth Sidewalk Repair Program citywide. Video of Councilwoman Rodriguez’s remarks ahead of the Council’s vote can be viewed here.

“Angelenos shouldn’t have to wait for the Olympics to enjoy safer, more accessible sidewalks they deserve. We need to deliver these critical infrastructure improvements right now. My Youth Sidewalk Repair Program in Council District 7 has already proven that we can accelerate the repair of dilapidated infrastructure while creating meaningful, paid job opportunities for our city’s young people, mitigating liability risk, and improving accessibility in our neighborhoods. This citywide expansion will build upon our success and invest in a workforce that will continue strengthening our communities well beyond 2028.”

BACKGROUND:
In partnership with the LA Conservation Corps, Council District 7’s Youth Sidewalk Repair Program offered approximately 30 local youth (ages 18–26) across three cohorts with paid on-the-job experience, GED support, and construction career certification. A fourth cohort is currently receiving on-the-ground training.
