Los Angeles, CA – On Friday, March 14, 2024, Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez introduced a motion to establish a Department of Homelessness in the City, with the goal of dismantling organizational silos, improving coordination, and enhancing transparency.
In order to effectively combat homelessness, the City must focus and combine its efforts. After the department is established, it will report to Mayor Karen Bass and the Los Angeles City Council, and be in charge of creating and overseeing the programs that address homelessness.
“A Department of Homelessness can help verify what each level of government is doing to solve the greatest humanitarian crisis of our time; I cannot say with certainty that we have an efficient and effective operation free of redundancies. With a mutual goal of creating a responsive system, we must also be prudent and judicious with resources to assure we can accelerate our impact and aid more individuals, because urgency can and should also be efficient and the Department of Homelessness may be a key part to delivering these goals.” says Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez.
This motion is next to be considered by the Homelessness & Housing Committee.
