Yesterday I addressed the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) at their annual conference here in Downtown Los Angeles.

As NALEO celebrates 50 years, I called on my fellow leaders to build on the progress we’ve made and rise to meet the challenges of today. Our responsibility is not only to represent our communities, but to lead with purpose and deliver meaningful results for all Americans.

“This is not a money issue. This is a leadership failure.”

I first called for the City to break from LAHSA in March 2024 because it was clear our homelessness response lacked the effectiveness, accountability and oversight Angelenos deserve.

Two years later, Housing and Homelessness Committee Chair Nithya Raman failed to develop a homelessness governance reform timeline and to bring oversight of our homelessness programs and contracts in-house. This indecision led to the Budget and Finance Committee creating a road map for the formation of a City Homelessness Governance Structure that still needs to be approved by Council.

After years of failed audits, poor oversight, and billions of taxpayer dollars spent without meaningful accountability, it’s time to move the City away from LAHSA, and build an in-house homelessness governance structure that is transparent, accountable, and focused on results.

Unlike other programs aimed at addressing homelessness, the RV-to-Home program I launched in CD7 delivers proven results.

I created RV-to-Home in 2022 to humanely reduce RV encampments while helping residents transition to long-term housing stability through a coordinated approach that combines outreach, case management, housing navigation, and the permanent removal of RVs from our City’s streets once residents are safely housed.

It’s working, which is why the model we built in CD7 is able to be implemented citywide to address RV encampments across Los Angeles.

I was elected to solve the problems affecting everyday Angelenos and be accountable to the people of Los Angeles, and I don’t believe residents and business owners would be pleased to have less access to public meetings.

That’s why I vehemently opposed my colleagues approving a ballot measure that asks voters for permission to drastically cut the number of regularly scheduled public Council meetings and reduce opportunities for Angelenos to hold their government accountable.

At a time when residents are demanding more transparency, City Hall should not be looking for ways to do less.

Last week, my colleagues approved my charter amendment proposal that will go before voters in November to double our investment in parks. I’m so thankful to the park advocates for their partnership and support to achieve this milestone.

This down payment on our City’s future will provide the sustained investment our parks deserve and deliver lasting quality-of-life upgrades for neighborhoods across Los Angeles.

This weekend, I was honored to join the Rotary Club, the American Legion, and the Sunland-Tujunga community for the neighborhood’s annual 4th of July Parade.

As we commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States, we honor those who have sacrificed for our freedom, celebrate the strength of our diverse community, and reflect on the values that continue to unite us. I hope everyone had a safe and happy Independence Day!

More than 6,000 community members joined us at Hansen Dam Aquatic Center for an evening of beach games, water fun, music, food, and family activities before watching an unforgettable 1,000-drone show light up the night sky.

Over the weekend, LAPD confiscated and towed three illegal pocket bikes following reports from residents. My office worked closely with LAPD to respond to these ongoing concerns and improve neighborhood safety.

Pocket bikes are not street legal and pose significant safety risks while creating excessive noise and disturbances in our neighborhoods. If you see illegal or reckless activity, please continue reporting it to LAPD Valley Traffic at (818) 644-800. Your calls make a difference.

This morning, the ongoing LA Alliance federal court case that began in 2020 will once again review the City and County’s progress in addressing the homelessness crisis.

Following my June letter to the Court, today’s hearing will also focus on ensuring LA County accounts for whether taxpayers are receiving the mental health services they have already paid for and whether individuals requiring a higher level of care are being transitioned from City-funded interim housing into the appropriate County-operated systems of care.

LA County has the resources and taxpayer funds to deal with mental health issues and must do its part to help ensure vulnerable individuals receive appropriate treatment, free up City shelter beds for others experiencing homelessness, and move more Angelenos off the streets. ... See MoreSee Less
