Thank you to Goodwill Southern California, Los Angeles Mission College, and the City’s Economic and Workforce Development Department for making the new WorkSource Center at LA Mission College a reality in the Northeast San Fernando Valley. This center will provide job training, employment opportunities, career counseling, and more. It will bring much-needed resources to our community and students, helping residents develop skills and connect with local employers.

I’m proud to be part of this milestone and excited for the positive impact it will bring to our region. Let’s continue working together to support our community’s future, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to succeed.

I created Operation Bright S.P.O.T (OBS) to supplement existing city resources to beautify commercial corridors in our community and to respond quickly to blight. OBS recently removed overgrown weeds and vegetation in the Mission Hills area significantly beautifying our communities.

I recently joined LA Mission College students to enjoy some pizza and present a certificate to recognize Winzza Pizza for their success and contribution to our community. In collaboration with West Valley Homes, YES and our city departments, we permanently removed an RV on Valmont and Valaho Streets in Tujunga and housed two individuals. This was part of my RV to Home Program which launched in 2021 and has housed 148 individuals and removed 103 RVs from city streets in Council District 7.

I was honored to recognize Evelyn Serrano with the 2024 Pioneer Women Award representing Council District 7. Evelyn is an accomplished artist, educator, and community leader who has made a profound impact through her work at the intersection of creative placemaking, activism, and land stewardship. As co-founder of Sunland-Tujunga Forward, she leads efforts to promote equity, inclusion, and anti-racism, organizing events such as an annual Pride Festival and Indigenous Peoples Day.

It was a joy to celebrate Evelyn. Her leadership and service embody the spirit of this award, and her contributions to our community will leave a lasting legacy.

I share the frustrations and concerns of residents regarding the health and safety hazards RVs pose in our neighborhoods. It’s why my team partnered with LA Sanitation and LADOT to remove an abandoned RV from the Sylmar community. Working together, we can have cleaner, safer neighborhoods.

Today, October 3, is Latina Equal Pay Day, an important day to highlight the pay gap. In 2023, Latinas continued to face the pay gap that is, on average, an abysmal 51 cents to every dollar paid to white, non-Hispanic men. Latinas are one of the fastest growing, most powerful groups in the United States. Yet, for the first time in 20 years, the wage gap has widened for Latina workers.

Latinas are overrepresented in industries that are underpaid and often lack basic workplace protections. Farmworkers, domestic workers, immigrant, migrant, seasonal, and part-time workers continue to be left out of critical employment protections. Until the women who perform some of the most essential jobs are able to achieve economic security, our economy and communities will not be as strong as they possibly can be.

This is why I will continue to speak out this #LatinaEqualPay Day. We must unite to address glaring injustice in the workforce impacting Latina workers.

Hoy, 3 de octubre, es el Día de la Igualdad Salarial para las Latinas, un día crucial para que se cierre la brecha salarial. En 2023, las latinas siguen enfrentándose a la brecha salarial que es, de media, de unos abismales 51 centavos por cada dólar pagado a los hombres blancos no hispanos. Las latinas son uno de los grupos de mayor crecimiento y poder en los Estados Unidos. Sin embargo, por primera vez en 20 años, la brecha salarial ha aumentado para las trabajadoras latinas.

Las latinas están sobrerrepresentadas en sectores mal pagados y que faltan protecciones laborales básicas. Las trabajadoras agrícolas, las empleadas domésticas, las inmigrantes, las trabajadoras temporeras y las trabajadoras de tiempo parcial siguen quedando al margen de las protecciones laborales fundamentales. Hasta que las mujeres que desempeñan algunos de los trabajos más esenciales no puedan alcanzar la seguridad económica, nuestra economía y nuestras comunidades no serán todo lo fuertes que podrían ser.

Por eso seguiré alzando la voz en este #LatinaEqualPayDay. Debemos unirnos para hacer frente a la injusticia en el sector laboral que afecta a las trabajadoras latinas.

Being in Mexico City today and celebrating the inauguration of Mexico’s first female president was truly inspirational! This is not just a victory for women and Latinas but for everyone who believes in progress and the importance of diverse voices in leadership.

I am truly honored to be witness to this historic moment and knew President Sheinbaum was going to continue to be an impactful leader after meeting with her during her tenure as Mayor of Mexico City. Then and now we will continue to partner to tackle the pressing issues facing our cities. I look forward to seeing the impact of her leadership as the President of Mexico. Mama. Abuela. Cientifica. Presidenta! Felicidades!

If you are a corner store, neighborhood market, restaurant, grocery store, or café that serves healthy food in the Northeast San Fernando Valley, you may be eligible for a $25,000 Good Food Zones Micro Grant!

This is an initiative I supported, in partnership with the Los Angeles Food Policy Council and it builds upon my work to support small businesses and restaurants in Council District 7. I encourage all eligible businesses to take advantage of this program.

To be eligible, businesses must meet these requirements:
1. Must be a for-profit food-centered business such as a corner store, neighborhood market, restaurant, café, or grocery store.
2. Must be located within a designated Good Food Zone.
3. Must have actively been in business on or before March 1, 2020.
4. Annual revenue cannot exceed $1 million.

Recently, my team joined the North Valley Joint Neighborhood Council meeting to connect with community members. I am pleased that the Sunland-Tujunga, Foothill Trails, Sylmar, Mission Hills, Pacoima and North Hills East neighborhood councils from my district participated actively and voiced their hopes and concerns regarding pressing issues. Thank you to the Department of Neighborhood Empowerment and the Board of Neighborhood Commissioners for organizing this event and recognizing neighborhood councils for their long standing dedication to community betterment. Their continued engagement plays a crucial role in fostering collaboration and addressing the needs of our neighborhoods.

Addressing illegal dumping is a top priority for me and my team. Recently in the North Hills, Pacoima, and Sylmar communities in partnership with City departments we addressed illegal dumping and bulky item removal in two locations on Nordhoff St. in North Hills, on Telfair Avenue in Pacoima, and on Bromont Avenue in Sylmar.

It takes all of us working together to ensure our community receives the services it deserves.
