Los Angeles, CA – For the first time ever the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) will be hiring Wildland Hands Crews due in large part to the work of Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez who secured the funding. Councilwoman Rodriguez  led the initiative to secu re funding for the LAFD, enabling them to recruit Wildland Hand Crews. These crews are vital to wildfire management, serving as the foundation of fire suppression efforts in difficult terrains. They bring a unique combination of skills, including endurance and adaptability, making them essential in the fight against wildfires, especially in challenging, difficult to access areas.

Council District 7 communities have faced a number of large scale wildfires including the Sayre, La Tuna Canyon, Creek, and Saddle Ridge Fires. Securing Wildland Hand Crews will require an extensive recruitment and hiring  process and Councilwoman Rodriguez seeks the media’s support to encourage  best and the brightest to apply for this important job

These crews are an integral component to complete public safety toolkit and introduce proactive measures to creating defensible space for communities, in high fire severity zones found in the foothill communities of Council District 7 and other hillside areas throughout Los Angeles. This new resource will enhance our current efforts and bring the LAFD on par with other firefighting agencies across the region. I am excited to welcome the men and women who will fill these positions to the City family,” says Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez.

Wildland hand crews play an essential role in protecting our communities, and this new position will further support our efforts in managing and controlling wildland fires.
