Press release

Los Angeles, CA – Today, Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez’s motion to have the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) and the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) report to the City Council’s Public Safety Committee has passed. Metro and LAPD will next report  to the Public Safety Committee. As the chair of the Public Safety Committee, Rodriguez will  extend oversight of Metro and LAPD to increase public safety and to advocate for more immediate and effective safety measures to protect riders and operators.

“Riders and drivers are rightfully fed up. Declaring an emergency to bypass transparency and competitive bidding is far from responding to the immediate safety concerns that jeopardize the lives of working people whose only transportation option is Metro.  With a board that is demographically and geographically unaligned to the ridership, I’m tired of waiting for increased protections for constituents. Plexiglass and thoughts and prayers won’t protect drivers or commuters.” says Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez.

In late April, a motion was approved in which Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez requested the LAPD to report to the Public Safety Committee on the crime statistics on Metro trains, buses, platforms and at stations from 2017 to current time, including the demographic breakdown of all victims.

Furthermore, Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez requested that Metro  and LAPD report to the Public Safety Committee on the scale of deployment and role of Metro’s Ambassador program and how it interacts and intersects with t law enforcement agencies to respond to calls for service from riders and transit operators including bus operators in an effort to find solutions to help solve the spike in violence for Metro riders and drivers.
