Here’s a quick recap of what’s happening in the Seventh Council District this week:
New Safety Measures on La Tuna Canyon Road
Over the past several months, I’ve partnered with the Department of Transportation to lead a community discussion and planning process to address the decades-long traffic safety concerns on La Tuna Canyon Road. The robust community meetings resulted in a series of changes on La Tuna Canyon Road between Sunland Blvd to Tujunga Canyon Blvd. Two segments of passing lanes will be removed to implement the following improvements:
- Continuous double-yellow lane separation throughout
- High-visibility pavement markers
- 1.2 lane-miles of buffered bicycle lane
- Shared shoulder for bicyclists and equestrians
These measures will help improve safety to prevent serious or fatal collisions and provide predicable and efficient travel for all users on the busy corridor.
Starting on Saturday June 9th, a portion of La Tuna Canyon Rd between Sunland Blvd and Tujunga Canyon Blvd will be resurfaced as part of this road safety project. Construction is expected to take one week to complete. Crews will make every effort to minimize construction-related delays, but at times the road will need to be closed temporarily to accommodate implementation. I will continue to monitor the project’s performance over the next few months. If you have any questions, please contact my Sunland-Tujunga District Office at 818-352-3287. Cooling Our Streets in Mission Hills
(Click the photo to watch the video)
This week, I joined the Bureau of Street Services to install the second cool pavement in the 7th District in Mission Hills near Lassen Elementary School (our first is located at Lopez Canyon Environmental Education Center in Sylmar). The cool coating reflects the sun’s heat, rather than having the heat absorbed by the surface, and reduces the temperature by nearly 10 degrees. High temperatures and climate change are real issues in the Northeast Valley and we must continue to find innovative solutions.
Celebrating Our Chief Information Officer

This week in City Council I honored Ted Ross, General Manager of the City’s Information Technology Agency, for receiving the prestigious “Chief Information Officer of the Year” award from the Los Angeles Business Journal. I’ve had the pleasure of working with Ted to launch a complete redesign of LA BAVN – Los Angeles Business Assistance Virtual Network to make it easier for small business owners to access business opportunities within the City. In addition, as Chair of the Information, Technology, and General Services Committee, I work closely with Ted to increase the public’s access to services and bring new technology to the City. Ted has over 22 years of private and public sector technology experience, and plays a vital role in making Los Angeles a hub for innovation. Ted, congrats on this much-deserved honor!
‘Raising Zoey’ Community Film Screening + Q&A
Happy Pride Month. I am proud to host a free movie screening of Raising Zoey and a panel discussion on LGBTQ family acceptance within the Latino community at Pacoima City Hall on June 23rd. Come hear from 13 year-old trans activist Zoey Luna who in the face of bullying and endless teasing from both school officials and students, continues to courageously live her life and tell her story in hopes of helping others with similar experiences. See a dead tree 🌳? Please contact my office. I recently worked with the Bureau of Street Services to remove two dead trees on Foothill Blvd. in Sunland that were impacting the pubic’s right of way. If you see a dead tree please report it by calling 3-1-1 or my office at 818-485-0600.
