La Tuna Canyon
La Tuna Canyon provides its residents with many opportunities for outdoor activities. The 1,100-acre La Tuna Canyon Park located in the Verdugo Mountains has great hiking trails and panoramic views of Los Angeles. La Tuna Canyon is also home to the Tuna Canyon Detention Center Monument, which remembers the Japanese, Italian, and German Americans detained during World War II.
On Friday, September 1, 2017, a wildfire broke out in La Tuna Canyon burning nearly 8,000 acres. This was the largest wildfire in the City of Los Angeles in 50 years. Thanks to the leadership of the Los Angeles City Fire Department and its partners across the State, the fire was finally 100% contained on Saturday, September 9, 2017.
